Summary
During the Second World War, once it was realized that the Allies would ultimately triumph, the powers that be carved up civil aviation in the UK between a few state-owned airlines. At the end of the war, with hundreds of surplus aircraft and pilots with demob money to buy them, many small airlines were founded. Working around the rules and confounding the Air Ministry, those small airlines grew to become household names - from Laker to Silver City, from Derby Airways to Skyways. These airlines, from small beginnings, began to take on the might of BEA and BOAC, and grew, some to become major players, with Derby Airways growing into British Midland and Laker into Skytrain. Guy Halford McLeod tells the story of Britain's other airlines in their formative years
