Summary
In 1854, as the Crimean War raged, a Jamaican woman named Mary Seacole was moved to volunteer her nursing services to the British army - and was refused. Undaunted, she embarked upon the journey to Balaclava under her own steam, and proceeded to establish an unofficial system of caring for the soldiers: tending the injured on the battlefield, acting as cook and quartermaster, and nursing sick and wounded men in the wards of her 'British Hotel' on Spring Hill. Her engaging memoir brings to life the many privations and hardships - and rewards - of her tenure as the soldiers' beloved 'Mother Seacole'
