- Summary
-
- Spencer, Fran and Iris are three friends living in London in the early 1990s, who each feel that life is passing them by. Spencer's lost his lover who bequeathed him a list of things to do; Fran shares a run-down house with her oddball brother; Iris spends her time cleaning up after her two sons.
- Very funny first novel by the producer responsible for the hit TV shows Room 101 and Father Ted, Lissa Evans, who has a gift for sharp dialogue and setting up hysterical set pieces, especially one involving snails. But Spencer's List is also that rare thing - a comic novel set in Dalston, a sort of no-man's-land between Hackney and Islington, where young professionals accumulate who cannot afford Islington prices, yet live in fear of the mean streets of Hackney itself. Evans is very good indeed on the existential desolation of the Kingsland Road eel and mash shop. And behind the prose there are signs of yet more brilliant comedy for television. Read the novel first

- Summary expansion
- A wonderfully funny tale of life lived on the edge - of reason, of failure and of (just possibly) a brighter future. Some people live life in the fast lane. Others have stalled and are waiting for assistance on the side of the road, sustained only by the piece of chewing gum they've just found in the glove compartment. Spencer, Fran and Iris have something in common. Or rather they have something missing in common. Each feels that life if passing them by - Spencer's lost his lover who bequeathed him a list of things to do; Fran shares a run-down house with her oddball brother; whilst Iris spends her time cleaning up after her two teenage sons
